Want to show someone Wimberley from a different angle? Take them up Old Baldy.
There are 218 rock steps between the bottom and that wide-open view of the Wimberley Valley. Yes, your legs get a say in this outing. But leave yourself time at the top: the view in every direction is the reason to make the climb.
Old Baldy also has a story worth knowing. When the property went up for sale in 2014, community members rallied to help protect it. By 2015, the Save Old Baldy Foundation had raised funds to help the city buy the land. The park we get to enjoy today exists because people here cared enough to save it.
Finding Old Baldy
The park is at 33 LaToya Circle, just off FM 2325, about 2.5 miles from the Square. Put that address into your directions before leaving downtown.
Hours are 8 a.m. to sunset. You can find the location and park information on the Old Baldy Park page.

Those steps are part of the outing
Think of this as a stair climb with a view waiting at the top. Take your time, pause when you need to and let the slowest person in your group set the pace. Nobody needs a personal best to enjoy Old Baldy.
It’s worth mentioning the steps when you invite friends along. “Want to see a great view?” and “Want to climb 218 rock steps?” can get different answers, and your guests deserve both pieces of information.
The way back down deserves a little time, too. Wear shoes with grip, keep your hands available and save the photos for when you’re standing still.

Bringing the kids
For children who enjoy a climb, counting the steps gives them something to work on along the way. Just remember to save some energy for coming back down.
Strollers won’t make the trip to the top. The summit approach is a staircase, so this is an outing for a group comfortable with steps. If someone needs a step-free route, choose another stop you can all enjoy together.
One detail parents will appreciate knowing before they arrive: there are no public restrooms at Old Baldy. Make that stop first.
What we’d take along
Water and good walking shoes belong at the top of the list. A hat, sunscreen and mosquito spray are useful additions for time outdoors, and a small bag keeps everything out of your hands while you climb.
Bring your phone for the view, but you don’t need to pack for a full day out. We’d keep this stop simple and save the larger picnic for somewhere with the facilities your group needs.
If the steps are wet, give the climb another day. The view will still be here.
Go early enough to enjoy the late-day light
Old Baldy is tempting when you’re thinking about evening photos, but there’s one timing detail to remember: the park closes at sunset.
Arrive with enough daylight to climb, spend time at the top and get back down before closing. You’ll enjoy that view much more when you aren’t watching the clock.
A few things to leave at home
Alcohol, smoking and drones are prohibited at the park. Bring drinking water, leave the drone behind and enjoy the view from where you’re standing.
Help keep the park pleasant for the next group, too: carry out your belongings and put litter where it belongs.
Make it part of your Wimberley day
We’d pair Old Baldy with time on the Square and something good to eat afterward. It gives visiting friends a different perspective on the valley, and it leaves plenty of the day for shops, galleries or a long lunch.
Our One Day in Wimberley guide brings together suggestions from Wimberley Buzz readers if you’re putting a day together.
And when you reach the top, give yourself a few minutes before heading down. You’ve climbed the steps. Enjoy the reason you came.
