Some Wimberley memories come with a very specific order: catfish on Friday, a club sandwich on French bread, chicken piccata, or a pie to take back to 7A. When we asked about Wimberley restaurants and shops we miss, our Facebook and Instagram followers had plenty to share.
Our community question was simple: “What old restaurant, shop, business, or local spot do you still miss? Tell us what you loved about it, too!”
The answers brought back favorite meals, date-night spots, shopping stops, and even memories of the Square without stoplights. Here are the places—and the little details—that stayed with our readers.
Burger Barn: Catfish Fridays, Chicken Pasta, and Chocolate Cake
Burger Barn came up again and again. Some readers needed only those two words and a few exclamation points. Others remembered exactly what they would order if they could go back.
There was the Friday catfish, the Thursday chicken pasta, and the chocolate cake. One reader gave Quincy a special shout-out for making that chicken pasta the best. Another remembered Burger Barn as a great place for an inexpensive lunch.
Those everyday favorites clearly made an impression. Even in a conversation full of much-missed places, Burger Barn kept bringing people back into the comments.
Cypress Creek Cafe, the Buzzard Bar, and Dinner Bell
Cypress Creek Cafe was another name readers returned to, sometimes simply writing “CCC.” The Buzzard Bar received its own mentions, including a memory of the pavilion.
Dinner Bell also appeared throughout the responses. One reader put it as “the old Dinner Bell / Triple C.” For people who remember these places, a name alone was enough to say a lot.
Juan Henry’s, Juan Enrique’s, and Milagros
Readers shared plenty of love for Juan Henry’s, with some comments using the name John Henry’s. Juan Enrique’s drew its own enthusiastic mentions, including one reader who remembered having plenty of good meals there and at Burger Barn.
Milagros was another recurring favorite. One response summed it up with “Milagros no doubt.”
The conversation even reached back to a reader’s memory of an earlier Mexican restaurant in a house on River Road, on the property they remembered later becoming Juan Henry’s. If that rings a bell, we would love to hear more.
Wimberley Pie Company and a Sweet 7A Tradition
The mentions of Wimberley Pie Company came with hearts, exclamation points, and one especially sweet memory. A reader recalled picking up dessert there to enjoy during stays at 7A.
That same reader also missed the Silver Spoon Cafe at 7A. Sometimes a favorite food becomes part of the whole memory of a visit, and getting dessert is as much a tradition as where you stay.
Jobell’s: A Date-Night Favorite
For readers missing Jobell’s, two menu memories stood out: chicken piccata and cherry chutney.
One reader called it their go-to date-night place. Others chimed in to say how much they loved it. The comments made it clear that people remembered both the food and having a favorite place to spend an evening.
Barbecue Memories: Miss Mae’s, Kelly’s, and Bernice’s
Miss Mae’s BBQ received repeated mentions, while readers also remembered Bernice’s BBQ and Kelly’s Hill Country BBQ.
One household got wonderfully specific about Kelly’s: the brisket, smoked turkey, and what they called “the very best coleslaw in the whole world.” That is quite a compliment for a side dish—and exactly the kind of detail we hoped this question would bring out.
The Dishes Readers Still Think About
Several other responses sounded like orders people would happily place again:
- Idlewild: A club sandwich on French bread that one reader said they still drool over.
- Casa Blanca / Casablanca: Queso and taquitos.
- Cawley’s at The Junction: Burgers that one reader called the best.
- Charlie’s Catfish: Fried catfish, with one reader remembering Charles Christian’s place.
- Hildee’s / Hildie’s: Readers mentioned Hildee’s on the Square and a much-missed Navajo taco.
- A German food truck: One reader fondly remembered its schnitzel and spaetzle.
The German food truck was not named in the response, so we have kept that memory separate from Hildee’s. If you remember it, help us fill in the name!
More Local Spots That Got Some Love
Linda’s Fine Foods / Linda Allen’s and Kate’s Place came up several times. Readers also remembered Wimberley Willie’s Pizza, Golden Spoon, Crucita’s, Artie’s, Cristo’s, and Taqueria San Judas.
Other responses named Vittles, The Back Porch, Hills Edge, and The Sugar Shack. And the Supper Club got a particularly enthusiastic tribute: “Supper club was legendary.”
Even Burger King and Arby’s made it into the conversation. Everyone has their own list of places they wish they could visit again.
The Shops—and the Square Without Stoplights
The memories went beyond food. Readers mentioned shopping at Betsy’s Hanger and Billy-Bob’s Knob, along with a separate mention of “Billie Bobs.” Radio Shack also got a nod.
One reader remembered Ace with gas pumps. Others went straight to a memory of the town itself: no stoplights on the Square.
Together, those responses paint a picture of the everyday places and routines people still carry with them.
What Would You Bring Back?
If you could have one more meal, make one more shopping stop, or spend one more evening at an old Wimberley favorite, where would you go? And what would you order or do first?
